The Pay Off

The world is full of people capable of things you’d think nobody should be capable of
They’ll break your heart and that’s just a start, They’ll cut you and laugh at the scars
They’ll make you pay for it in blood.

But you don’t let that get you down.
Yeah, you stick out your neck for this cut throat town.

So what’s it mean, you made the scene?
You got yourself so squeaky clean. You’re ready to take one for the team.
Another star that wants to shine twice as bright for half the time
Who’s place are you holding in line?

Sometimes you just have to wait for your turn to come around
Sometimes you’ve got to kill to get your crown

No matter what you do it might never payoff for you
If the payoff is all you’re really in it for

Do you build a house to have a home?
Do you earn your cash to pay a loan?
They’ll break your bank and let’s be frank
They’ll leave you floating in the tank
They’ll put you back in file and rank.

But you don’t let that get you down
Yeah you stick out your neck for this cutthroat town.

Church Van

That night she made me a man in the back of the church van
Under a blanket, driving hone in the dark
Everyone asleep or so we thought

And when we pulled back into town, I knew she would let me down.
She barely looked back at me, just started talking to Katie
And that was all we ever had.

You don’t have to remember every single damn thing
There’s an art to forgetting certain bits and pieces
Because they’re bound for destruction like candle wax to the flame
And their light will keep you up for hours before you sleep again

That day I caused such a fuss in the back of the blue bird bus
My spiral notebook, some pages ripped out and thrown
And I put my fist across his nose
And when the blood began to pour well, he didn’t bother me no more
It stained his t-shirt. Got all mixed up with the tears
And I cried right there beside him.

You don’t have to feel sorry for every single damn thing
Because it’s not worth remembering those petty childish feelings
Because they’re drowned in delusion and they’re drunk with romance
And they’re bound to tear you to pieces if you give them half a chance.

~~solo~~

That night she made me a man in the back of the church van
She barely looked back at me, it wasn’t supposed to mean a thing
And that was all we’ll ever have.

Feel Good

I spent my money and I squandered my chances
I probably wrecked a couple dozen romances
I did it all just to make myself feel good
I did it all just to make myself feel good.

Everybody’s got their own cross to bear but
Some people pay some one to take it from them.
They do it all just to make themselves feel good
They do it all just to make themselves feel good

(chorus--)
Don’t let the future drag you down
You’re living for the moment, taking all that you’re allowed
And when bad consequence comes ‘round
No, you just cant be bothered, it’s never gonna bring you down.

One day you wake up and you’re showing your age but
You can’t bring yourself to turn the page
You put it off just to make yourself feel good
You put it off just to make yourself feel good.

(repeat chorus--)

(Solo over chorus)

Spend all your money and go squander your chances
Go on and wreck another broken romance
Don’t change your mind don’t question what you believe in
Don’t think that everything just happens for a reason

You do it all just to make yourself feel good
They do it all just to make themselves feel good
Maybe it’s all just to make ourselves feel good
Maybe it’s all just to make ourselves feel….
Feel good.

False Alarm

It’s a blood red moon, the color of battle
An ultra maroon
Cut half in two like a broken medallion
Hung there by you

You swore your love, you wore my love like a dirty uniform
But in the dead of night you crossed the lines and put a new one on
Your looks and charms were false alarms but they could not be ignored
And as the sirens blare you toss your hair and whip up another storm

Its a worn out tune, its jargon and prattle
Filling the room
Mysterious bruise, don’t know how it happened
Or who gave it to you.

You tapped the lines, you placed your spies but what were they looking for?
You search the dead to night when the broad daylight is hiding so much more
Your looks and charms were false alarms but they could not be ignored
And as the sirens blare you toss your hair and whip up another storm

~~solo~~

and it seems your walls are crumbling
Where did they go? Were they made of flesh and bones?
Or where they just ghosts wearing your clothes?

(repeat 1st chorus and end)

Record and Pause

Out past the county dump was where I grew up
Out past the edge of town was where I hung around
Finding ways of filling up my live long days
Trying to get someone to come around and take me into town or just anyplace

I was waiting on the radio to play that song.  My tape deck’s ready on record and pause.
I’ll sit waiting on the radio to play that song all night long.

Before the suburbs grew and the college too.
Before we knew that we needed more discount superstores
We found ways of filling up our live long days
Trying to find someone who’s going out just to drive around or anything

Except waiting for the radio to play that song
The tape deck in this car wont play at all
We’re still waiting on the radio to play that song
All night long

~~instrumental~~

I can get some liquor if you can get some smoke
And I know a little cul-de-sac where no one ever goes
And we could both just sit there getting high and getting cold
Yes, we could both just sit there feeling young and getting old

And just waiting on the radio to play that song
Our tape desks ready on record and pause
Yes, we’ll wait there for the radio to play that song all night long.

Routine

Are you ready for a few surprises?  Had enough of what’s been going on?
Well, as sure as the sun rises, yes, I know a change is gonna come.
But it don’t come with any easy answers. It don’t appear out of a puff of smoke
It aint no song and dance man that you’ve seen a million times before
Yes, you’ve seen a million times before.

Everybody’s got this routine that they’re following
Day in, day out
Everybody’s got this routine that they’re following
Day in, day out

At the edge of your personal crisis, there comes a moment
when you make a choice
and you give up on the big questions, you’re not sure you even want to know
you’re not sure you even want to know

Everybody’s got this routine that they’re following
Day in, day out
Everybody’s got this routine that they’re following
Day in, day out

You should know by now that all your changing is only rearranging
all the parts you’ve always had, the good the bad, the happy, sad, the little
things that drive you mad are going to still be there

You’re only running against yourself
You might pick up the pace but it’s a one man race and you’re in it ‘till
the bitter end.
Yes you’re in it ‘till the bitter end.

Once More Again

Rise in the morning and get on your feet
Slump towards the mirror and wipe off your sleep
Once more you’re looking yourself in the face
Once more you feel like a rat in the race

So run, run, get on your feet boy and run
It’s new and its old, a storybook sunrise you’ve seen too many times before
But it will be over soon.

A fog on the city, A fog in your brain
A fog on the glass of the window pane
There’s shadows around you the sun cant displace
Mistakes on your masterpiece that can’t be erased

The colors run, run, the image is muddled then baked dry in the sun
It cracks and it flakes and beauty is sometimes unmade that way
And that’s hard for you, so hard for you to take

The waiting, the waiting for the ending to circle back to the beginning
The waiting, the waiting for the ending to bring us back a new beginning

Because you rise in the morning and you get on your feet
You look in the mirror, do you like what you see?
Because there’s love all around you and there always has been
Yes, there’s love all around you so wont you feel it again
Let it come to you once more, again.

Long Goodbye

We said goodbye now a few times before
We said our goodbyes now but we cant get out the door
All our loves were strangers
Our sweethearts had soured through
We said goodbye to all them but we never leave the room

Are we waiting on some company?
Cant we make it on our own?
Someone’s calling in a broken voice over the phone
Wondering if you have forgotten them
They’ve been waiting in the car
Five more minutes and they’re leaving you right where you are.

We’ve said it all now and we’ve dried our eyes
We’ve felt it all now but we still cant sympathize

Are we missing some simple thing?
We never knew about before
Something we don’t know the name of but its calling once more
Wondering if you feel alright today
Or if you feel anything at all
Calling to you like a prisoner taping on the wall

There’s nothing happening, you’re just imagining things
There’s nothing happening, just actors looking for a scene
You don’t know what it will bring

Do we just need a little company while we’re feeling so alone?
Someone waiting up to meet us when we stumble back home
Asking what was it you did today?
Asking where and when and why
Someone sharing every sweet hello and long goodbye.
Goodbye.

Lyrics Coming soon.

The World Doesn't Know What It's Waiting For

Well the world doesn’t know what its waiting for
Maybe its waiting for you
No, the world doesn’t know what its waiting for
Doesn’t everybody go too soon?

Doesn’t everybody go too soon?
Don’t you ever get to say all you wanted to?
Doesn’t everybody waste some time?
Does everybody really do their best to survive?
And doesn’t everybody go too soon?

No, the world doesn’t know who its crying for
There may be too many to choose
No the world doesn’t know who its dying for
Maybe it will make an excuse

Doesn’t everybody have an excuse for everything they did or they didn’t do?
Couldn’t everyone have done a little more?
For whatever it was they were fighting for
Doesn’t everybody go too soon?

Doesn’t everybody go too soon?
Don’t you ever get to say all you wanted to?
Doesn’t everybody waste some time?
Does everybody really do their best to survive?
And doesn’t everybody go too soon?

Well the world doesn’t know what its waiting for
Maybe its waiting for you
No, the world doesn’t know what its waiting for
Doesn’t everybody go too soon?
